More issues with Dell XT

Since the relatively short time-frame that the University has offered the XT tablets to students, there have been numerous problems with the tablet buttons, video drivers, and the external optical drive.

Solutions to problems:

Tablet buttons – enable them in Quickset. Make sure the button says “Turn off.” The Quickset is somewhat confusing. To enable a function, the button name needs to say “Turn off.” If you want it off, make sure it says “Turn on.” Many people have come to me asking why the buttons aren’t working and well.. there’s the answer. Personally I would prefer if Quickset would have said “Buttons are Enabled” or “Disabled.”

Video drivers – I’ve already commented on this here

External Optical Drive – By default in Windows XP, IF you try to plug in the optical drive while the computer is on, you will get one of two things – nothing or an error saying that the device could not be installed. Any computer-savvy individual would think to update the driver for drive. Too bad that isn’t the correct answer. The solution is to update XP to Service Pack 3. Now you will be able to insert and remove the external drive at your will.
